Great New Antique Mall To Visit During Your Next Stay!

Elizabeth's Antique Mall

On Route 20 just 15 minutes from our Inn

mall name

This was the old school in Elizabeth.  Part of the facility is being used by Highland Community College and now this part is overflowing with a terrific mix of antiques, reproductions and new vintage items that all work well together.  What a treat!  The owners, Michael and Ashley, are obviously great visionaries and the place shows it from the fresh outside paint colors to the interior where the spaces are divided by wood palettes.  Amazing!  Way to go Michael and Ashley.  Here's to years of thriving business!

booth 1

Look at this display.  It is charming.  The space is well lit and there is a variety in this mall like none other.  Here are a few images of what you can expect to find!

green lantern

Here is a SMALL sampling of the books they have all neatly layed out in book shelves on the second floor.

books

I've been watching the "Burlap Craze" lately and they have some really cute tablecloths, bows and wreaths here.

Piano anyone?  Lots of furntiure here not just pianos.  And they have plenty of space to expand but while you are there, right now, you won't feel like it's half empty.  It feels full!

pianos two

Dave on the throne!  Lots of dressers, hutches, desks, etc.

Dave on chair

This pic is for my friend Jeff who plays the congas and the djemba.  I think this would be a great addition to our worhsip team!

drum

See, things like this.  Altered reproductions.  But somehow it all just fits together and works!  I love this cabinet.

painted cabinet

Beautiful and affordable!  I could go on and on forever!

repro lamp

Who can resist this white stove.  Lovely isn't it?

You don't have to wait for the farmers market to open now to get homemade soaps and scents.  I love the soy bean jar candles.  They are wrapped in thing gauze so they look as unique as they smell.  You have to check this out!

soaps

This wa sour take.  My Dad collected venetian glass clown statues.  Over the years they've been lost or broken.  Mom still has several but she needs this guy to add to her collection.  Can't wait to give it to her.  I'm working on a quilt that is all wool.  I found these yummy bundles at a terrific price.  Can't wait to get started now.  I did leave some behind but not for long...so if you are looking for affordable wool you better get there quickly!  Oh, and of course we had to buy some of their fresh cookies.  When you walk in there is a very comfortable seating area with a TV.  You can buy a great coffee drink and rest between floors!

our take home

The Owners: Ashley & Michael

Wishing you great success in your new venture.  The place is great and we will be sending our guests to you for sure!

By the way; turns our Ashley and Michael stayed with us a few years ago.  How fun is that?

This is one of those great "by chance" photos.  There's Ashley working in the background.  Looks like I planned the cool blurred effect but it just happened.  Photo rule #1 - if you take enough photos you are bound to get a few really great ones!

Have a great day today!  Keep your chin up and keep running the good race!

The Vintage Torquefest in Dubuque had something for everyone!

dave truck

I have to admit right here and right now that I was not interested at all in going to this car show.  I could have been having some "me" time, quilting, painting, sitting and staring at the walls or any other number of fun things.  However, I adore my husband and I wanted to share this experience with him.  After all, he would go to a quilt show with me in a minute if I asked.  So, here we were.  It was a cool windy day and I brought a book and some knitting just in case I found a comfy spot to sit and enjoy some quiet time.

car model

Much to my surprise I was immediately taken in by the huge variety of vehicles.  Even more interesting were the outfits people had on.  Many of them dressed in the 50's.  But....a little bit grungier perhaps. And don't take that the wrong way.  I tend to like "grunge" painting and scrapbooking pages.  The women and girls had cute hairdoos and outfits with the addition of huge tatoos.  Interesting look.  This one particular model did not have large tatoos but I thought she was very authentic looking.  Quite frankly I was too frightened to ask the ones with large tatoos if I could photograph them.

truck with patina

There were loads of antique cars, some motorcycles, old bicycles, the scooters that I learned people used to ride around on, vendors, an auction, food, music.....  I was drawn to the trucks.  Love the trucks especially ones with patina.  You can't get that effect if you tried.  Gorgeous!

green tinted windows

Several of the cars had tinted windows.  Now I'm pretty sure this is not a "vintage" thing but they were cool looking.  This one had green tinted windows to match the car.  We also saw red and blue tinted windows.

station wagon

A Station Wagon?  How cool.  This brought back a lot of memories.  So you see, I was having a great time at the torqufest with my husband!

hood ornament

This was awesome.  I was surprised that there weren't many fance hood ornaments.  But this one caught my eye as being the best!  Maybe I missed the fact that there were more to look at just because there was soooo much to see!

pin stripping

Is it pin-stripping or pin-striping.  This was awesome too.  I thought this one was the best so here it is!  pretty awesome right?

honk

I got a kick out of this one not as it relates to the cars but as it related to my body these days.  Isn't this great.  I want this on my car!  Honk if anything falls off.  Gotta love it!

quilts in car

And guess what I found?  Quilts, at a car show, go figure!  We saw this at the end of the show.  I think of it as a blessing for being so cooperative with this trip.  I love these old beat up quilts.  They made my day!  All in all I'd rate this a top of the line experience.

Marquee

AND CHECK THIS OUT!  A Quilt show the following weekend!  THIS weekend!

Think Dave will go with me? Of course he would.....if I asked!

31 days of devastation - I don't think so!

And congrats Amy & Gene wherever you are.  I'm sure your wedding at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds facility was wonderful! Great facility!

This is what happens when I leave for the Paducah Quilt Show

Dave Waiting

This is my darling Dave, voted "Best Innkeeper in the Midwest", owner/opeator of Bernadine's Stillman Inn.  This is what he does when I leave to go away for a few days.  How cute is he.  He sat by my car out in the driveway and said "I'll see you right here when you get back"!

Stalker: NO

Wonderful Husband: YES

Not only is Dave an excellent innkeeper providing the guests with the greatest concierege service in the world but he is also a wonderful husband, father, friend...you name it.  No one tries harder than Dave.

When we started dating he would drop in on me at work and just sit in a chair by my desk for a few moments just to "check in".  What a honey!

Anyway, I was able to go on a five day trip with my friends to Paducah Kentucky for their annual quilt show.  Oh my gosh, this show is wonderful, big, tiring, exhausting, exilerating.  We had a blast.  It was six of us girlfriends and you can imagine the laughter!  We learnd so much about quilting and about each other, what fun.

Unfortunately we won't be going back to Paducah next year.  We've decided to try another quilt show.  We've been going to Paducah show for about 6 years now.  Maybe 5.  It's an 8 hour drive for us.  We noticed the Quilt Show in Grand Rapids Michigan.  That would be a 5 hour drive so I believe next year we will be heading there.  One problem: It is in August and that is one of our busiest months here at the Inn.  I got it...I'll fly Dave's brother Tim in to help him!  BAM

Enjoy the pics!

Yes It Is True...on March 17th, 2011
Dave will be 65 years old!
"Happy Birthday My Sweetheart"

Dave has the Dick Clark thing going on and no one ever believes him when he shares his age.

He is a terrific husband, friend, father, carpenter, innkeeper, Christian, my goodness I could just go on and on about him.

Dave has been successful at many things in his life. He's a hard working and dedicated man. Right now I think his favorite thing is being a Grandpa, "Big Daddy" to Cara Isabella. And we have another granddaughter on the way! One of the things he truly enjoys doing is running the Stillman Inn. If you know Dave, you know he just loves, loves, loves people. His standard greeting is "Hi, I'm Dave, you'll like me, I'm a nice guy" and nothing could be more true. We have met so many interesting and wonderful people and made so many new friends here at the Inn over the past ten years.

Retirement: Yes, it's inevitable. One day I must have Dave all to myself. At some point he must agree to retire but I know he will never leave the inn unless someone else replaces him who is just as genuine as he is. This he would do to honor our repeat guests. We are going to start thinking about selling the place over the next few years. If you know of anyone who is worthy of and interested in taking over the baton, please let us know!

"Where will Dave go" you ask? No problem. We plan on staying in Galena near our grandchildren. The new innkeepers, whoever they end up being, will have our contact information so please, give us a shout and we will be happy to lunch with you! Mind you, we've only just started thinking about it, we aren't going anywhere yet so come see Dave for his Birthday year long celebration!

Proud Wife of Dave Anderson,

Bernadine

Happy Birthday Dave Blog Special: Two night midweek stay in any of our lovely rooms, mention this blog and get a pineapple upside mini cake during your stay. Dave's favorite! Good now through March 17th, 2011
